The Saatchi Gallery is a London contemporary art gallery and independent charity opened by Charles Saatchi in 1985. Exhibitions that utilized Charles Saatchi's collection, beginning with American artists and minimalism, moving on to the Damien Hirst-led Young British Artists, followed by shows featuring only painting, led to the Saatchi Gallery becoming a recognized authority on contemporary art worldwide. The gallery moved into several properties, first in North London, then on the South Bank by the River Thames, and finally in Chelsea, the headquarters of the Duke of York, its current location.
In 2019, Saatchi Gallery became a registered charity and began a new chapter in its history. Recent exhibitions include the artist JR's major solo exhibition, JR: Chronicles, and London Grads Now in September 2019 where the gallery's spaces will be loaned to graduates of leading art schools who faced the cancellation of physical degree shows due to the pandemic.
The gallery's mission is to support artists and make contemporary art accessible to all by presenting projects in physical and digital spaces that are engaging, enlightening and educational for diverse audiences. The gallery presents exhibitions on themes that are relevant and exciting in the context of contemporary creative culture. Its educational programs aim to reveal the possibilities of artistic expression to young minds, encourage fresh thinking, and foster innovation.
